The first step is to take a class online so you can get a training certificate. This certificate is required before you can actually get your California guard card. The first class you will take is called Powers To Arrest. It consists of four hours of instruction covering what you must know concerning your powers to arrest. As a security officer you do not have the same authority as a policeman. In this class you will learn the difference and come to understand what powers you do have under California State law.

The second class you are required to take covers Weapons of Mass Destruction and Terrorism Awareness. In this class you will learn basic anti-terrorism observation skills and techniques.  This is also a four hour class.

In addition to the two classes, you will also be required to take and pass a final exam. The exam is not difficult if you pay close attention to the coursework. Testing consists of multiple choice questions. Most people are able to pass with no problem. In the event that you do not pass the first time, you are allowed to study and retake the exam at no additional cost.

Please be aware, however, that once you pass the course you will still be required to submit an application to the BSIS and get fingerprinted at a “Live Scan” facility before you will be issued your California guard card. Currently, the BSIS application fee is $51 and the Live Scan fee is $66. The BSIS application process time currently runs approximately seven to ten days.
